The Pit (off-site)
Rosie Dent & Marcus Jackson
201, The Terrace, Wellington
19 August - 25th August

Opened Wednesday 21st August at 5.30pm.

In 2018, we—Rosie and Marcus—lived at 201 The Terrace together. The neighbouring block—203 The Terrace—is one of the few spaces along the residential part of the street that hasn’t been built up. In place of a house, there lies a pit overgrown with vegetation.

After some time, it became clear that there is something special about The Pit. It provides a quick and rare view over the city along an otherwise densely packed street, but, as we began to notice people stopping—sometimes for minutes at a time—more often than not, passersby were disregarding the view of the city, in place of staring into The Pit. We began documenting the people drawn to this perhaps-mystical place, in humour or in search of an answer. The Pit became for us something of an urban legend, an age-old story constructed around the coffee table as we over-looked the street. For others, it was a place of allure—somewhere that people gathered, stopped mid-walk to take stock, or let the void quiet their minds. Or, they were admiring a view: we may never know.

The Pit is a speculative off-site installation, hosted by play_station at 203 The Terrace. The work comprises a mailbox at the site, filled with pictures of passersby in admiration. As a whole, The Pit is a faulty experiential offering. We give you this memory of this place, so that you might think fondly of times past, in places and spaces that were weightless in their importance.

The off-site exhibition will be open from Wednesday 21st August - Sunday 25th August with play_station being open usual gallery hours.
