Slow Cover
Max Fleury and Sabina Rizos-Shaw
17/9/20 - 3/10/20

"It’s weird cos it sounds like he doesn’t know what he’s singing about, like he’s just singing the throaty shake."

Slow Cover is a collaboration between Sabina Rizos-Shaw and Max Fleury. Through a series of celebrity cutouts, cover videos, drawing workshops, and a karaoke league they consider the implications embodied in the gesture of a remake/cover. Slow Cover looks into taste as a means of distinguishing ourselves from others.

(…what it looks like to love something)

Set in a music themed cafe that was once a CD chain store, Max’s installation Lazy Sunday centres around an improvised acoustic cover of Robyn’s 2018 song ‘Honey’ and recordings of a cafe employee completing quick crafts and tasks around the cafe. Inspired by the phenomena of self-released YouTube covers, Max formed a performance persona based on his own childhood music ambitions.

Inspired by fan communities and the joy of celebrating the things you love amongst friends, Max and Sabina ran Fan Club, a fan art workshop, and subsequently created a video work with the art made on the night. Sabina has also made a range of celebrity photo stand-ins so that people can experience a moment of being those that they idolise.

"Sing me a slow cover."
