Feminine Rubble
Prairie Hatchard-McGill
29.2.24 — 23.3.24
A series of handmade paper works spring from a magpie-like urge to collect, to hold onto and revel in. Ribbons and broken jewels are cast in paper, made of scraps collected from the artist’s prior collage works. The scraps become pulp, the pulp becomes paper, paper holds new collage, more scraps are created, more paper is made, and so on.. a kind of forever stew methodology of making.
Carrying on themes of gathering and glamorous recycling practices, a series of scarecrows fill the space. Strong wooden frames are draped in stylish rags (many borrowed from the artist herself), forming figures that both frighten and protect, promising a good harvest for all.
Prairie Hatchard-McGill (b. 1997) is an artist from Tāmaki Makaurau. Her practice spans across sculpture, collage, and performance, with a strong interest in domestic crafts. She is interested in countercultural histories (and futures!), glamour, and sexuality. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions at Artspace Aotearoa, Neo Gracie, and SaatchiSaatchi&Saatchi. This is her first time showing in Pōneke.
Hatchard-McGill holds a BFA (Hons) from Te Waka Tūhura Elam School of Fine Arts and Design.
