‘fixed-term’ documents Huni Mancini's experience as a fixed-term Library Assistant at the Fine Arts Library, Elam School of Fine Arts, during the period March 2018-March 2019.

In June 2018 the University announced the Library’s closure along with the Architecture & Planning and Music Libraries despite much protest nationwide and internationally. The closures signal a move away from public to private information spaces, and the precarity of libraries in the face of wider political and economic forces.

Through the interplay of six new works, ‘fixed-term’ will explore the role of the document in representing histories where there is no longer a thread of continuity, but rather a fracture, a discontinuity, the mark of which is obliteration, erasure and amnesia.

Huni is a writer and information professional whose work explores the intersection of information technology and indigenous communities. Her whakapapa is Tongan, from the island of Niuatoputapu and village of Mu’a, and Italian, from the villages Monti and Grillara.

She graduated with an MA in Media and Film Studies from the University of Auckland, where she completed research on the use of video games to archive Indigenous oral histories. Huni has worked as a Library Assistant at the Fine Arts Library and Architecture & Planning Library and is currently the Pasifika Cultural Collections Assistant at the Archive of Māori and Pacific Sound.

Huni has exhibited work in New Perspectives with Simon Denny (Artspace, 2016) and Dark Objects (The Dowse, 2017). She recently completed the RM Archive Residency at RM Gallery and Project Space. She has published work in Diaspora Drama, BackStory and Lieu.
