Keani Rewha

08/05/25 - 31/05/25

In Thoroughfare, Keani Rewha’s paintings depict scenes from rural Aotearoa, alongside text-based paintings displaying excerpts from his poetry. These monochromatic oil paintings explore allusions to intimacy between men in small towns—considering how an isolated social context affects the queer experience. Part fact, part fiction, these paintings of memory and its inaccuracies are souvenirs of an uncomfortable past.

Keani Rewha is a painter based in Tāmaki Makaurau, whose practice investigates the tensions between queer identity and rural landscapes. Drawing from both personal and found imagery, he uses delusion as a tool to reimagine experiences within rural spaces where he lived. He holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts and is currently completing a Master of Visual Arts at Auckland University of Technology.
