Homing is an exhibition of bic pen blotter drawings by Aidan McNeillage. The show explores the technological interactions between the artificial, the mechanical and the human, and the results of its hallucinated meaning.
The works deliberately use simple and often ungendered prompts to generate the figures present in the compositions, making visible the inherent biases and assumptions embedded within AI training data, and by extension within society. As a result the works exist as digital collages and are executed using a pen-plotter, functioning as a devirtualisation of digital image making processes.
The images are born from algorithms, reverted to different codifications and remade as physical images by the machine, putting pen to paper.
The works with their titles unlock an imaginary that asks us to participate, reflecting our own biases against an emergent simulated intelligence.
Aidan McNeillage is a practicing exhibiting artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau.
